During the late Qing Dynasty, a large number of Chinese folding fans that were exquisitely carved and gorgeously painted were produced in Canton (now called Guangdong). Later these fans were in good graces of western merchants and became fashion accessories for noblewomen after they were shipped to Europe and America. The materials which were used to make Chinese folding fans were mostly exquisitely carved ivory, pearls and shells and lacquer wood. Many images of officials and their wives in Qing Dynasty were painted on these fans. Due to the mysterious oriental sentiment presented by such fans, each lady in upper-middle class family at that time owned a Chinese folding fan to show off her wealth and nobility.
